Outreach & Mission

Q. What is the ministry of the laity?

A. The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church. - Book of Common Prayer, p. 855

Christ the King has a very active Commission on Outreach & Mission. The focus of the commission is to help our neighbors, whether the neighbors are church members, or our local, state, or international communities. Wherever there is a need, we encourage church members to notify the outreach commission so that we might find help.

The commission can help in two different ways. One way is to provide monetary help. Several examples come to mind. When Hurricane Michael caused such a problem in the county next to us, our church members donated funds. The Commission on Outreach & Mission selected to help one family whose home was totally destroyed. This money was used to provide the husband with materials to build a home and helped them in other ways.

The commission helps several local nonprofits with ongoing financial donations. Examples of these nonprofits are Point Washington Medical Clinic and Caring & Sharing of South Walton. Some of the other needs are for just one-time requests. An example of one-time donations is the Senior Center on 393 needing technology assistance. We currently have one international organization that we support financially. Randy and Lynn Pike, parishioners at Christ the King, have been helping The Zihuatanejo Christian Fellowship based in Mexico for years and now the Commission on Outreach & Mission also provides funds for some of the projects.

The second way and probably the most important way the commission encourages parishioners to help others is to volunteer their time and effort to help others in need (either with church members or local individuals who need help). This can be as simple as making phone calls to those older individuals that are housebound so they have contact with other humans, or helping someone with a specific problem. Fr. Richard often gets calls for help and we ask the congregation to provide help. Please contact Mark Mahaffey at 770-402-6370 for more information.

If you are a local person viewing this webpage, you do not have to be a member of this church to help with outreach. There are many other needs so call Mark Mahaffey at 770-402-6370 to find how you might help a neighbor.
